I wonder how much agreement/disagreement there is in regard to how many years ago that would be. Mitochondria are almost a completely separate organism that lives in our cells; our cells rely on them to generate the power that our cells need to live, but they are not part of our cells and our cells don’t make them. The DNA that they have is not human DNA and has nothing to do with the design of the human the mitochondria inhabit. The mitochondria are able to self replicate, and since they can only live inside a living cell, every human inherits the mitochondria of their mother that were living in the original egg cell. But mitochondrial DNA mutates over time the same way nuclear DNA does, so it would be impossible to trace everyone back to a single ancestor. Plus there almost certainly was not just one ancestor that every human is descended from. As a species evolves, it evolves as an entire species, not just a single organism. Plus an organism must be able to mate with other members of it species or the trait that makes it different would just die out when it does. Common scientific evidence now points that modern humans (Homo Sapiens) originated in Africa about 200,000 years ago.
